Community Foundation of Elmira-Corning and the Finger Lakes, Inc. has inspired philanthropy to make lives better for nearly 50 years. During this exceptional time, our work through this global pandemic has only grown stronger. The last three months have put an incredible strain on the nonprofit organizations assisting communities who have been affected by the coronavirus. Therefore, the Community Foundation Board of Directors has taken the following steps in an effort to support the recovery phase:
Responsive Grantmaking: To expedite regular granting procedures, the Board of Directors has advanced the fall Community Grant Program to the summer months in anticipation of the growing needs of the community. This three-month shift will allow our grants to sustain and develop vital services now for residents who stand to lose the most from the pandemic.
Community Grant Program: The Community Grant Program is the foundation’s largest unrestricted grant cycle providing over $500,000 in grants annually to nonprofits located in Chemung and Southeastern Steuben counties. Traditionally, the program has provided direct program support however in an unprecedented move, the Board of Directors has approved a second option that will allow nonprofits to apply for general operating support. The main purpose for this change is to support the evolving needs of our nonprofits who have been challenged due to COVID-19 and to give them more flexibility to achieve their missions.
Increased Funding: To respond to the growing needs of nonprofits and to ensure we maintain a quality of life for all, the Board of Directors has more than doubled the grantmaking power of the Community Grant Program by releasing additional funds from the Foundation’s endowment. It is more important than ever to ensure needed grant dollars reach the right programs at the right time.
