Youth Philanthropy

Our Youth Philanthropy Programs are focused on growing a community of givers from all ages. Whether you’re a student interested in getting involved or a teacher or educator looking to bring philanthropy to your kids, we hope you’ll partner with us!

For Teachers

The Community Foundation’s Philanthropy in the Classroom and Learning to Give programs brings grantmaking into your classroom. The lessons and activities are beneficial to students of all ages and grade levels and are structured accordingly. Our Philanthropy in the Classroom programs even complement second grade teachers’ lessons in the NYS Learning Standards for the Civic Ideals and Practices unit.

Philanthropy in the Classroom

Our 30-minute lesson teaches students about philanthropy and how nonprofits play a critical role in our community. Students will have the opportunity to end the lesson by giving a $100 grant to a local nonprofit of their choice!

If you are a teacher in the Elmira, Corning, Edison, Horseheads, or Addison School districts and would like to schedule a classroom visit, please contact Katie for more information.

Put Giving at the Heart of your Lesson Plans.

The Community Foundation is partnering with Learning to Give (LTG), a nonprofit based out of Michigan with international reach. The goal of Learning to Give is to provide quality teacher-written lessons and resources to help PreK-12 educators educate, equip, and empower their students to be giving and caring citizens.

With a vision of the world as a place where all youth are knowledgeable and equipped for lifelong engagement in community as givers of time, talent, or treasure for the common good, Learning to Give is a resource available to all educators – from the teacher, to the youth group leader, to the soccer coach.

Learning to Give’s free resources include searchable lessons, youth activity suggestions, teacher stories, and so much more. LTG encourages youth-led community service projects, service-learning activities, and youth-focused grant-making.

If you are a teacher or educator using Learning to Give lessons in your classroom, you may apply for up to $150 to support your activities!

As an LTG Ambassador Trainer, local teachers can contact Katie if they are interested in bringing philanthropy into their classrooms or schools to schedule a workshop to show schools how to utilize the resource.

For Educators

Our community is rich with programs that support students outside of school. If you have a great idea for a community service activity or your students have been bugging you to buy new games for the PlayStation, empower them to fund it through a grant written by them!

Youth Grant-writing Program

Empower your youth participants by giving them the opportunity to write a grant to fund an activity or project. Grant writing teaches students to identify a need or want, research a solution, budget, and put plans into action. We’ll work with you to customize a grant-writing program for your students. Contact Katie for more info.

Philanthropeeps are currently at the Corning-Painted Post Middle School, Cohen Middle School, and at Broadway Academy in Elmira.

Apply for an RYP Grant

Rose’s Youth Philanthropists request grant proposals from organizations that impact youth in a wide variety of fields in Chemung and Southeastern Steuben counties. The RYP grant deadline is February 1st and grants are awarded in May.

Fund Your Project

Have a great idea for a community service project for your students? Have your students write their own grant! We’re happy to guide your students through the process of identifying a need, researching a project, and writing a grant to fund the project. If you’ve already identified a project, let’s find a way to fund it! Contact Katie for more information.

Rose’s Youth Philanthropists

Rose’s Youth Philanthropists (RYP) is a regional youth grants committee requesting proposals from organizations that impact youth in a wide variety of fields in Chemung and Southeastern Steuben counties. The S. Roberts Rose Fund was established at the Community Foundation of the Elmira-Corning and the Finger Lakes in order to give youth a voice at the grantmaking table. RYP offers grants of $200-$2000 to local youth-serving organizations.

Join the Committee

The Rose’s Youth Philanthropists committee, comprised of students from local area high schools, meets on Sundays during the school year to learn about nonprofits in our region, volunteering, and read, review, and make their own grants. RYP usually recruits students in the spring for the upcoming school year. Contact Katie to learn more and become part of the committee.

Finger Lakes Youth Forum

The Youth Forum is a student-led program designed to provide high-school-age students with a place to talk about difficult topics, share experiences, and create action. Monthly discussions are currently taking place virtually with 9th-12th grade students at Corning-Painted Post High School.

To become involved in the forum, all students must register below. Once the form is submitted, students will receive notification and calendar invites to upcoming discussions.

Follow the Finger Lakes Youth Forum on Instagram for the most up-to-date information about upcoming discussions and topics important to students. Launched in 2021, the program will eventually grow to include other districts within the Finger Lakes Region – please contact Katie McConville or Dr. Millicent Ruffin, Director, Community Affairs at the Office of Racial Equity and Social Unity if there is interest in bringing the Forum to your school!

The forum is sponsored by Corning’s Office of Racial Equity and Social Unity in partnership with the Community Foundation.
